GRANITE THEATRE

Westerly RI

                                                           August 6 – September 5, 2010

  See Review By Tony Annicone

A young bride who lives above a bank with her husband who is the assistant manager, innocently sends a mail order off for some Scandinavian glassware. What comes is Scandinavian pornography. The plot revolves around what is to be done with the veritable floods of pornography, photographs, books, films and eventually girls that threaten to engulf this happy couple. The matter is considerably complicated by the man's mother, his boss, a visiting bank inspector, a police superintendent and a muddled friend who does everything wrong in his reluctant efforts to set everything right, all of which works up to a hilarious ending of closed or slamming doors. This farce ran in London over eight years and also delighted Broadway audiences.   "A really funny Broadway show." - ABC TV.

A wonderful and hilarious new southern comedy!  If you liked STEEL MAGNOLIAS or FRIED GREEN TOMATOES you'll be head over heels over this show.  Five Southern women, whose friendships began many years ago on their college swim team, set aside a long weekend every August to recharge those relationships. Free from husbands, kids and jobs, they meet at the same beach cottage on North Carolina's Outer Banks to catch up, laugh and meddle in each other's lives. The show focuses on four of those weekends and spans a period of thirty-three years.  THE DIXIE SWIM CLUB is the story of these five unforgettable women—a hilarious and touching comedy about friendships that last forever…

Patrons may enjoy a selection of wines, beers and soft drinks from the theatre’s cash bar at all performances in the comfortable, spacious lobby of the beautifully refurbished, historic theatre.  The works of local artists adorn the walls.  Opening nights of each new production feature a special post-show party and mixer of patrons and performers.

“Lights On Afterschool”

October 21st, 6 - 8:30pm

Providence, RI Thursday, September 2nd, 2010:

TRAVELING THEATRE TO HOST A “LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL” EVENT

Traveling Theatre, a nonprofit Arts Enrichment organization located in Providence, RI, in collaboration with The Boys and Girls Club of Providence will sponsor a Lights On Afterschool event on Thursday, October 21st at 6:00-8:30pm.

Participating partners include PASA, Apeiron and 21st Century Learning Centers.  It will be one of more than 7,500 such events around the nation that day, the eleventh annual Lights On Afterschool celebration, organized by the Afterschool Alliance. This event is sponsored in part by BJ’s Wholesale, Borders Bookstore-Providence Place Mall and Hinckley, Allen and Snyder LLP.

The event will demonstrate the many benefits that afterschool programs have in Rhode Island: keeping kids safe and healthy, inspiring them to learn, and relieving working parents of worries regarding their children’s activities during the afternoon hours.  The highlights of this event will be performances from the youth of Traveling Theatre, music, a scavenger hunt, refreshments and story time with local children’s author Alison Paul.  Parents, neighbors, local government and school officials from Providence and the surrounding area are expected to attend.

                        Thursday October 21, 2010 6-8:30pm

Traveling Theatre-Home of the Southside Boys & Girls Club

For more information, or to attend the event, contact Karen Boucher, Outreach Coordinator, at (401) 444-0766.

Traveling Theatre was established in 2003 with the mission of creating a community of highly qualified teaching artists who travel throughout Rhode Island, providing artistic experiences for youth that strengthen creativity, literacy, problem solving, cooperative learning, self-confidence, and the life skills to face everyday challenges. Since its inception, the organization has provided programming to more than 4,000 youth in over 14 schools, and trained dozens of young adults to become teaching artists. Traveling Theatre’s programs provide youth (who frequently come from underserved populations) with an outlet for self-expression and opportunities to create work about their experiences in this world.

SOLD OUT SECRET WORLD OF BUBBLES

TO RETURN FOR ENCORE PERFORMANCE

AT THEATRE BY THE SEA ON SEPTEMBER 4

MATUNUCK, RI – Theatre By The Sea owner and producer Bill Hanney, Producing Artistic Director Amiee Turner and Managing Producer Joel Kipper are pleased to announce that due to unprecedented popular demand, Keith Michael Johnson’s enormously popular production, The Secret World of Bubbles will return for two performances on Saturday, September 4, 2010.

“Having hosted Keith Michael Johnson’s Secret World of Bubbles show last year, we were aware that it was enormously popular with families, which is why it was included in this season’s Children’s Festival,” said Producing Artistic Director Amiee Turner. “When both performances sold out earlier this week, we decided to investigate the possibility of adding performances and are very happy that we are able to respond to the unanticipated demand.”

"How do bubbles do that?" The Secret World of Bubbles answers that question. Packed with stunning state-of-the-art bubble sculptures designed to snare the attention of every audience member, the science behind the magic unfolds like a mystery, making this show both educational and unforgettable. You’ve never seen bubbles like this before... you can learn a lot from a bubble!

Keith Michael Johnson (as seen on the Discovery Channel’s “Time Warp”) became the first Soap Bubble Artist in America to create a Bubble-Show with the help of public funding through Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, an appropriation from the Rhode Island General Assembly and private donors. From huge wobbly bubbles dancing in the air to smaller intricate bubble sculptures that eventually fall up to the ceiling, The Secret World of Bubbles is a celebration of creativity, expression, invention, imagination and hard work. It's a skillful blend of outrageous bubble effects and seriously-fun bubble experiments that can be tried at home!

The Secret World of Bubbles will be presented on Saturday, September 4, 2010 at 10:00 am and 12:00 noon. The theatre is located at 364 Cards Pond Road, Matunuck, RI. Single tickets are $10.00 each.
