PROVIDENCE COLLEGE
Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women Adapted by Mary G. Farrell & Caolan Madden Angell Blackfriars Theatre, Smith Center for the Arts
Providence College’s Department of Theatre, Dance and Film presents Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, adapted by Mary G. Farrell and Caolan Madden, directed by Providence College faculty member, Mary G. Farrell. In this version of the much-loved story of the March family, the author herself appears as the catalyst to bring her characters to life. Scenes of Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy, and their circle of friends and relatives in their 19th century New England home give us insight into the upbringing that led Louisa Alcott to write a book based on her own experiences. Between scenes, traditional music of the Civil War period will be performed by live musicians. Little Women will open with three performances on the weekend of March 26th, and continue with three performances two weeks later on the weekend of April 9th. Costume design will be by resident faculty member David Costa-Cabral, lighting design will be by Tim Cryan of New York, who has worked with the department for several productions over the last two years. THEATRE BY THE SEA
Redesign the gazebo walkway
Ocean State
Theatre Company (OSTC), the not-for-profit producing entity at the
historic Theatre By The Sea, has selected the award winning
landscape architecture firm, Gates, Leighton & Associates, Inc.,
to redesign the gazebo walkway area in conjunction with their recently
launched Engraved Brick Drive Fundraiser. Not only is the project
the first major fundraising endeavor for OSTC, it is also the
first major property improvement since FourQuest Entertainment completed
a renovation just prior to the opening of their inaugural season in
1989. OSTC is looking forward to taking this historic step in fulfilling
their mission “…to reinvigorate the Rhode Island landmark known as
Theatre By The Sea...”“The
property is a major component of what makes this site one of Rhode
Island’s most beloved historical treasures. In addition to producing
Broadway-quality shows in South County at affordable prices, OSTC is
also committed to the legacy of this extraordinary theater,” said Amiee
Turner, OSTC Board President. To have a
company like GLA onboard, with their decades of experience, ensures that
the historical integrity of the property will be upheld.” The
Landscape Architects of GLA are experienced planners, designers,
artists, and site development experts serving residential, commercial,
institutional, and public agencies. Their projects encompass
environmental protection, urban planning, site design, recreational
facilities, planning, and distinctive residential design. GLA’s
completed landscape projects include schools, mixed-use communities,
parks, resorts, highways, bridges, streetscapes, and town centers. Rare Earth Landscaping, Inc. of Charlestown, RI will be the general contractor for the project. Rob Quinn, the principal in charge, is a member of a long established South County family that has supported Theatre By The Sea over several generations. His company recently relocated from the Annapolis, Maryland area, where they specialized in residential and commercial landscape installations. The first phase of the project, will not only beautify the property, it will also allow for ongoing fundraising benefits and solves two major safety issues – the tripping hazard caused by the current edging material and the settlement of the bricks surrounding the gazebo structure. The second phase of the project, which will improve the handicap accessibility between the parking lot, theater, and handicap restroom, is scheduled to be addressed simultaneously with the safety issues. Both phases are scheduled to begin on March 15, 2010 and will be completed prior to the 2010 Summer Season, with a ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for May 1, 2010. The incorporation of the construction with the landscape design, will be coordinated by Dana Designs, the steward of the gardens at Theatre By The Sea.“We are thrilled that so many people have already chosen to leave their legacy at Theatre By The Sea,” said Ms. Turner. “People have composed quite a variety of messages. Some people have elected to commemorate birthdays, anniversaries, first visits to the theatre, appearances on stage, and favorite shows. Others have written messages signifying the theatre’s importance in their lives. Still others have left messages for future audiences.”The deadline for reserving an inscribed brick for installation prior to the start of the 2010 Summer Season has been extended to March 15, 2010. Brick orders received after March 15, 2010, will be installed in the spring of 2011. For additional information, call the box office at (401) 782-TKTS (8587) or visit www.theatrebythesea.com.
