Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women

Adapted by Mary G. Farrell & Caolan Madden

Angell Blackfriars Theatre, Smith Center for the Arts

Providence College’s Department of Theatre, Dance and Film presents Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, adapted by Mary G. Farrell and Caolan Madden, directed by Providence College faculty member, Mary G. Farrell.

In this version of the much-loved story of the March family, the author herself appears as the catalyst to bring her characters to life.  Scenes of Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy, and their circle of friends and relatives in their 19th century New England home give us insight into the upbringing that led Louisa Alcott to write a book based on her own experiences.  Between scenes, traditional music of the Civil War period will be performed by live musicians.

Little Women will open with three performances on the weekend of March 26th, and continue with three performances two weeks later on the weekend of April 9th.  Costume design will be by resident faculty member David Costa-Cabral, lighting design will be by Tim Cryan of New York, who has worked with the department for several productions over the last two years.

Tickets for events sponsored by the Department of Theatre, Dance, and Film may be purchased online at www.providence.edu/theatre or at the Box Office at the Smith Center, located in the main lobby of the building. The Box Office hours are Monday through Friday, 1:30 to 5:00 PM, and 1 hour prior to performances. Tickets may also be purchased over the phone with a credit card by calling 401-865-2218. Ticket prices are $11.00, $8.00 (senior citizen) and $5.00 (student). Seating for this production is reserved. Please note that the Box Office will be closed March 1-5 and on Friday April 2.

Thoroughly Modern Millie Dances into Pawtucket in April

The Community Players welcome spring with the delightful, toe-tapping musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie.  Directed by Greg Geer, with musical direction by Ron Procopio and choreography by Tim Reid, Thoroughly Modern Millie takes audiences back to the height of the Jazz Age in 1922 New York City, when “moderns” were bobbing their hair, raising their hemlines, entering the workforce and rewriting the rules of love.  Young Millie Dillmount has just moved to the Big Apple, a place full of intrigue and jazz, with frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a villainous dragon-lady audiences will love to hate!  Based on the 1967 movie, the stage version of Millie includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers guaranteed to make audiences of all ages smile.  Winner of the 2002 Tony Award for Best Musical.

Thoroughly Modern Millie runs April 9-11, 16-18 and 23-25 at Jenks Auditorium, Division Street, Pawtucket, RI (across from McCoy Stadium).  Curtain is at 8pm Fridays and Saturdays, with Sunday matinees at 2 pm.  Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for students (through high school).  This is sure to be a sell-out, so reserve online today at www.thecommunityplayers.org or call (401) 726-6860.

Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie, a semi-autobiographical retelling of the author's early life opens in previews on Thursday, March 4. Resident Director Fred Sullivan, Jr. (Much Ado about Nothing, Awake and Sing!) paints an unforgettable portrait of a family desperate to break free from dysfunction and society's constraints.

Says Sullivan, "Williams said about his writing that it was a plea for the understanding of the delicate people, the complex, broken people we all know, are or have within our families of origin or choice. It was his great and necessary subject as he was very much of their number. ...This play is filled with unforgettable characters and the beautiful human complexities of denial, shame, unconditional love, abandonment, identity and survival."

    THEATRE BY THE SEA

    Redesign the gazebo walkway

Ocean State Theatre Company (OSTC), the not-for-profit producing entity at the historic Theatre By The Sea, has selected the award winning landscape architecture firm, Gates, Leighton & Associates, Inc., to redesign the gazebo walkway area in conjunction with their recently launched Engraved Brick Drive Fundraiser. Not only is the project the first major fundraising endeavor for OSTC, it is also the first major property improvement since FourQuest Entertainment completed a renovation just prior to the opening of their inaugural season in 1989. OSTC is looking forward to taking this historic step in fulfilling their mission “…to reinvigorate the Rhode Island landmark known as Theatre By The Sea...”“The property is a major component of what makes this site one of Rhode Island’s most beloved historical treasures. In addition to producing Broadway-quality shows in South County at affordable prices, OSTC is also committed to the legacy of this extraordinary theater,” said Amiee Turner, OSTC Board President. To have a company like GLA onboard, with their decades of experience, ensures that the historical integrity of the property will be upheld.” The Landscape Architects of GLA are experienced planners, designers, artists, and site development experts serving residential, commercial, institutional, and public agencies. Their projects encompass environmental protection, urban planning, site design, recreational facilities, planning, and distinctive residential design. GLA’s completed landscape projects include schools, mixed-use communities, parks, resorts, highways, bridges, streetscapes, and town centers.
“The redesign of the theater’s entrance walk through the Gazebo Garden is a project that I would put in the ‘fun category,’” said Donald Leighton, GLA’s principal in charge of the project. “All those involved from the theater have brought a creative spirit to the design process and collectively we have crafted a walkway plan that ensures the proper fit with the surrounding landscape. The gazebo area will most certainly enhance the experience for theatergoers as they linger in the garden before or after a show. I know that the opportunity for patrons to add an engraved message to the walkway will greatly contribute to the enjoyment of future visitors and add to the historical relevance of the property.”

Rare Earth Landscaping, Inc. of Charlestown, RI will be the general contractor for the project. Rob Quinn, the principal in charge, is a member of a long established South County family that has supported Theatre By The Sea over several generations. His company recently relocated from the Annapolis, Maryland area, where they specialized in residential and commercial landscape installations. The first phase of the project, will not only beautify the property, it will also allow for ongoing fundraising benefits and solves two major safety issues – the tripping hazard caused by the current edging material and the settlement of the bricks surrounding the gazebo structure. The second phase of the project, which will improve the handicap accessibility between the parking lot, theater, and handicap restroom, is scheduled to be addressed simultaneously with the safety issues. Both phases are scheduled to begin on March 15, 2010 and will be completed prior to the 2010 Summer Season, with a ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for May 1, 2010. The incorporation of the construction with the landscape design, will be coordinated by Dana Designs, the steward of the gardens at Theatre By The Sea.“We are thrilled that so many people have already chosen to leave their legacy at Theatre By The Sea,” said Ms. Turner. “People have composed quite a variety of messages. A Chorus Line

    June 4 - June 20 (previews June 2 & 3)

On a bare stage, casting for a new Broadway musical is almost complete. It’s what they’ve worked for — with every drop of sweat, every hour of training, every day of their lives, it’s the one opportunity to do what they’ve always dreamed of - not to be the star, but just to get a job on the line. From funny to heartbreaking, these 17 dancers share the stories of their lives and when they’re done, so is the audition, and the final chorus line is chosen. Music includes “What I Did For Love,” “One,” and “Dance Ten, Looks Three.” Contains adult language and mature content.

    Hello, Dolly!

    June 25 – July 11 (previews June 23 & 24)

This spectacular musical follows Mrs. Dolly Gallagher Levi on her quest to match three young men with the perfect spouse. Full of glorious dancing and classic tunes, this vibrant testament to the human spirit and joy of living, not only recalls the 1890s era, in which this Jerry Herman musical is set, but also the Golden Age of Broadway. Music includes “Hello, Dolly,” “Before the Parade Passes By,” and “Put On Your Sunday Clothes,” which was featured in the Disney movie Wall-e.

    Little Shop of Horrors

    July 16 – August 1 (previews July 14 & 15)

A musical creature-feature that combines early rock and roll, doo-wop and Motown to tell the story of a hapless florist shop worker who discovers an unusual plant... with an even more unusual appetite! Funny and touching and just a little bit spooky. Join Seymour, a deranged dentist, the alluring Audrey, and the audacious Audrey II for this zany production that's absolutely out of this world! Songs include “Suddenly Seymour,” “Somewhere That's Green,” and “Feed Me.”  May not be appropriate for young audiences.

    The Full Monty

    August 6 – 29 (previews August 4 & 5)

Based on the international hit film, this grin and bare-it-all musical comedy winningly tells the story of a dispirited group of unemployed steelworkers in Buffalo, NY who are desperate to make some quick cash. Jerry, a divorced father behind in his child-support, convinces the gang to become male strippers at a local club. The Full Monty will have you cheering them on as they go all the way to conquer their fears and take charge of their lives. Music includes “Michael Jordan's Ball,” “The Goods” and “Let It Go.” Contains adult language and mature content.
